Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with ideas for exploring language in a specialised Logo microworld in an inquiry-based style. Specific examples for modeling language fragments, developed in the frames of the Research Group of Education (1978 – 1999) as elements of the Language and Mathematics integrated subject for 5 – 7 graders, are considered as the roots of an innovative approach to integrating informatics with mathematics and natural languages in secondary school. In concordance with the growing interest to the inquiry-based approach not only to science education but also to mathematics, informatics and language education, we argue that in an appropriately designed microworld for exploring language, the students can act like researchers.By developing computer models of language phenomena the students materialise hypotheses about these phenomena, check the models’ behavior with various input data and verify how general these models are. The feedback the students get after running their computer models helps them to edit their ideas, i.e. to correct, modify, refine and enrich them. This approach, typical for scientific research, turns out to be an important factor for the motivation of students to study natural languages in depth.
