Summary/Abstract: The paper considers the activities of the Institute of History of the Communist Academy (1929– 1936). The issue under study seems relevant, because it has still been insufficiently investigated in Russian and foreign historiography. However, the history of the Institute favors a better understanding of the evolution of educational and scientific policy in the Soviet state during the 1920s–1930s. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the mechanisms of functioning of the Institute of History of the Communist Academy, as well as to identify their main features based on the principles of sociology of science according to which every academic institution must be considered not as a mere “outer shell”, but as an important factor of new knowledge development. The investigation is based on extensive archival material with the involvement of published sources (analytical papers, data on the activities of the Institute, etc.). Thematically, the paper is divided into three main blocks related to the study of the structure of the Institute, its staff, and main directions of activity.
