Summary/Abstract: This article presents a set of historical-linguistic materials related to the scientific-pedagogical activity of the prominent Russian linguist D. N. Ushakov. He is known as a propagandist of the ideas of his teacher academician F. F. Fortunatov and a talented practical worker. The biographical sketch reveals interesting facts from the life of the scientist, his creative research and personal scientific development. He is an active participant of the socio-cultural processes of the first half of the twentieth century. The article refers to the prioritized directions of Russian linguistics, which were caught up by the Moscow representatives of the formal school and further developed in their works and experiments. Special attention is paid to practical activities of D. N. Ushakov and to the methods of teaching linguistic disciplines. This is the first publication of the following memorial materials: correspondence between A. A. Shakhmatov and D. N. Ushakov; the articles “Alphabet”, “Phonetics”; review by D. N. Ushakov on the “Methodology of the Russian language” written by P. O. Afanasyev.
