Summary/Abstract: The ancient Greek term “demagogue” is discussed in the present paper. The collected and analyzed data belonging to the ancient written record tradition allows the drawing of the following conclusions: when it is used for the first time by Thucydides the word does not have a pejorative meaning and is associated with eloquence; the second direct use of the term by Aristophanes has loaded it with the meaning of oral skill as well as with negativism that has become a prevailing tendency.
