Woman in ukrainian rituals: role of baba-midwife in maternity rites

Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to analyze the family rituals and identify high status and multifunctional role of women-midwives in maternity rites which served as hostess at the celebration of the birth and led the introduction of a newborn baby in a magical, spiritual and social context of traditional culture. It is assumed that box functionality role of women-midwives in maternity ceremonies and special relationship with the mothers, family, genus mothers, rural community point to its symbolic personification ancestor of all life Mother Goddess, Mother Earth, Mokosh or guardians cult was the basis Ukrainian peasant outlook, defining the dominance of women in the Ukrainian rites
