Summary/Abstract: Slovak ethnographer, the priest Karol A. Medvecký (1875 – 1937) was the initiator and the author of the first audio records of Slovak folk songs. He made them during his officiating in the village Detva in the summer 1901 using phonograph. He was inspired by the contemporary method of audio records which the Hungarian ethnographer Béla Vikár (1859-1945) had used to document folk songs and language dialects in Hungary since 1896.
