Summary/Abstract: The disastrous decline of the Polish state in the year 1795 has significantly ploughed through the biographies of Poles, especially those who took an active part in the political and cultural life of King Stanislaus Augustus’s epoch. As a result, they were forced to make new existential choices and to play social roles along the lines of the forcefully superimposed legal-and-administrative reality; they were doomed to share the lot of national slaves and outcasts. Out of the several possible post-Partition attitudes, behaviours and experiences, the author has selected and discussed five, deemed by him to be representative to the period of late 18th/early 19th century, i.e.: the landowner, the prisoner, the hostage, the soldier-in-foreign-service, the ‘organic worker’.
