Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper’s considerations is actualisation in the output of J.R.R. Tolkien and Stanisław Lem of the structure of a heroic myth based upon the sequence: separation – initiation – return; or: expedition – the key struggle – death – recognition (or, apotheosis). The comparative perspective has drawn out a contrast of two reciprocally opposing models of reality. In Tolkien’s works, a soteriological function fulfilled by the character is revealed, which reappears in a series of internal prefigurations projected by the text. Lem’s thinking produces a different pattern of solutions: the Polish novelist’s characters are immersed in a reality not infrequently founded on identification of contradictory categories, revealing the image of the world as a "coincidentia oppositorum".
