Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to study an important stage of the development of European academic instrumentalism – the English viola art of the first half of twentieth century by the example of its prominent representatives − Lionel Tertis, Rebecca Clarke and William Primrose. Methodology. The methodology of the study is to apply the historical-cultural, historical-dialectical methods that makes possible to present the basic material of the article due to historical and cultural context. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the work is that the creative portraits of L. Tertis, R. Clarke and W. Primrose are presented for the first time in the Ukrainian musicology with a focus on their performing activity and viola works, associated with their names. Conclusions. The material of the article is a good basis for further researches in the field of the viola art history. In addition, the inclusion of viola works, which are regarded in this article, in the performing and pedagogical repertoire will help its urgent expansion.
