Summary/Abstract: Farmland areas account for 60% of the total area of Poland and they are among those featuring the highest level of biodiversity in Europe. However, the high position in the ranking is threatened. The aim of the study is to identify key research problems which help protect the natural environment of Polish rural areas. To this end research questions were addressed to 45 scientists and experts in the field. Their answers were assigned to one of seven categories: assessment of biodiversity condition, protection policy effectiveness, choice between traditional and intensive farming, factors influencing farmer decisions, livestock importance, the importance of buildings and infrastructure and the importance of micro-habitats for biodiversity conservation. The problems are presented in a general form and we hope that they will contribute as a significant introduction to further discourse between policy makers and scientists. Starting a debate of this kind is crucial for effective conservation of the natural resources of Polish agricultural landscape.
