Summary/Abstract: Due to the ongoing process of enlargement of cities and the increase in the number of their inhabitants more and more often the problem of changing the approach to the development and expansion of the city in a systemic way rather that well known as chaotic and unplanned is discussed. The purpose of that approach is to ensure that even in larger cities their citizens could live better and healthier and, if possible, also more ecologically. An example of that type of systematic approach to the subject of both urban development and the functioning of the agglomeration is the idea of “smart city” also called “intelligent city”. The aim of this article was to present the basic information related to the concept of “smart city”. One part of the article is the description of Barcelona ‒ the most popular and well-known intelligent city. The last part of the article is the presentation of the most important “smart” elements that will happen or has already happened in Wrocław ‒ the second in terms of the smart technologies city in Poland.
