Summary/Abstract: The escalation of violence by the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham) and the influence of the ideology of the leader of the Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi group are the result of the use of a proper propaganda strategy that allows sanctioning ongoing violence, glorifying fighters and bombers, as well as indoctrinating and recruiting new followers of jihad. The agitation campaign involves the use of the style of sermon (Arabic chutba) delivered during Friday’s services, as well as the application of the rules of classical Arabic rhetoric (Arabic balagha). The Islamic state also uses traditional rules of public speaking during the liturgy as well as the latest media outlets such as the Internet and social media targeted at young or western audiences.
