Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of authorial illustrations in literary books intended mainly for children and young people on the Polish publishing market. Attention was payed to the lack of methodological research bases in reference to a problem which is formulated in such a manner. The works of such authors as Małgorzata Musierowicz, Tove Jansson, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Maciej Wojtyszko, Rafał Kosik, Zbigniew Lengren, Katarzyna Kotowska, Emilia Kiereś, Cornelia Funke, Walter Moers and Marbella Atabe were analysed. It was emphasized that authorial illustrations, despite their strong points that were demonstrated in the article, should also take the artistic and psychological requirements of illustration art into account. The phenomenon of authorial illustration refers to the few publications which are available on the Polish publishing market.
