Summary/Abstract: Jean-Baptiste Foltzer (1829-1916) is an Alsatian painter, later established near Paris, becoming a member of the French Artist Society in 1884. He traveled through Levant, and also arrived in Romania, reaching both Iasi and Bucharest, in the 1880s-1890s. The urban landscape representing the city of Iasi in 1882 is the only testimony of its presence in the former capital of Moldova. Such representations are rare for Iași in the second half of the nineteenth century and that is why the painting has a documentary value, besides its intrinsic artistic qualities. The work, preserved until recently in France, is today in a private collection in Spain.
