On Musical Moments in Andrei Bely’s Literary Shaping of Awaiting the Apocalypse

Summary/Abstract: Andrej Belyjs "Zweite Symphonie" ist ein höchst experimenteller Text, der Zusammenhang durch Wiederholungsstrukturen sowie wiederkehrende apokalyptische Gedankenfiguren stiftet. Über die Feststellung leitmotivischer Verfahren hinaus fragt der Beitrag nach dem zugrunde liegenden Kunstverständnis, das hier offenbar der Musik abgewonnen und für die Umsetzung in der Literatur produktiv gemacht wird. Als prägend auch für die Poetik der Prosasymphonie, die eine nicht still zu stellende Sinn-Bewegung initiiert, erweist sich dabei Belyjs zeitnah in einem Aufsatz geäußerte Auffassung von Musik als Bewegung. Eine Bestätigung hierfür konnte Belyj in der Musikästhetik Eduard Hanslicks finden. // "The Second Symphony" by Andrei Bely is a highly experimental text in which meaning is assigned by repeating structures and reoccurring apocalyptical figures of thought. However, this article does more than ascertain existing leitmotifs – it poses the question about the underlying understanding of art, which is here obviously derived from music and made productive in literature. Crucial for the poetics of prose symphony initiating a movement of meaning that, once set in motion, cannot be stopped is Bely’s conception of music as movement, which he develops in an essay written approximately at the same time. In this respect, Bely is regarded to be under the influence of the musical aesthetics of Eduard Hanslick.
