Summary/Abstract: In the Lithuanian language, diminutives are most commonly derived from nouns, less frequentiy irom adjectives and very seldom from numerals. Most often the diminutives of numerals are formed by suffixes -elis, -ėlis and -(i)ukas and three roots of the cardinal numbers - šimt-, tūkstant- and milijon- .The diminutives of numerals are used in the following speech situations: 1) they name a particular amount, but there is no expletively expressed evaluation; 2) the quantity named by the, diminutives of numerals is evaluated positively;3) the derivatives of numerals are used in such. speech situations, where the quantity they name is evaluated negatively, emphasising its littleness or even irony. The diminutives of numerals are sometimes used to express piurality. The extensive context is much considered to define the speech situation.
