Summary/Abstract: Concepts and terms of textual units are not settled in Lithuanian linguistic literature. One of the smallest textual units in particular has the most different definitions and is named as pilnatis, sintaksinė pilnatis, fragmentas, tekstema, paragrafas, pastraipa etc. It is obvious that such a variety of terms appears when the phenomena are considered at different levels. In this case semantic and compositional level of a text should be distinguished. Therefore, semantically, one of the smallest text units could be sintaksinė pilnatis (SP), which is more common in Lithuanian linguistics, though as a term semantinė pilnatis or tekstema would be more appropriate; at the compositional level it could be pastraipa (P). Understanding text units in the abovementioned way, one should expect that their boundaries and distinguishing features would be tangible. Hovvever, in different research works these two units are defined and commented in quite a similar way, the differences are not clear or even misleading. Having reviewed works by different authors, it can be seen that inconsistencies discussing SP and P appear because the type of a text as well as semantic and compositional text levels are not delimitated. In the majority of the texts SP and P coincide. Thus, these concepts can be used as synonyms, with pastraipa at the same time having a graphic form. In peripheral texts, on the contrary, pastraipa can be defined only extemally - as a piece of a text, which is indented and understood as a punctuation mark.
