Summary/Abstract: The paper approaches the problem of verbal humor and irony from a sociolinguistic perspective, starting from the Semantic Script Theory of Humour (Raskin 1985), which establishes that all humor must involve a semantic-pragmatic process. Applying these theoretical notions to G.B. Shaw's 'Caesar and Cleopatra', the paper shows that the choice of the target person has an effect on the identity of the person uttering the humorous remark.
