Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the role of diminutives, a subclass of softeners, in Romanian conversational discourse as positive politeness devices for avoiding disagreement. They mitigate the imposition of face-threatening acts and express shared knowledge. In addition, diminutives stress the emotional bond between interlocutors.
