Summary/Abstract: This paper briefly presents the main ethno-demographic characteristics of Sudan. It points to the contradictions and the sources of instability that arise from them. Great ethnic, religious and linguistic heterogeneity of Sudan allows the separation of several systems by different criteria. However, taking into account the basic characteristics of different groups, there are two main ethno-demographic systems: the Arab-Muslim in the north and the traditional-African in the south. In the paper are also highlighted the contradictions that exist within these systems. Relations between the tribes and nations, even the same denominational structures are very complex, which stems from the specific historical development. Contradictions between certain ethnic, religious and political groups, which develop into armed conflicts and years of war.
