Summary/Abstract: Crearea de conţinut digital de calitate şi asigurarea accesului deschis la acesta este un demers obligatoriu în societatea informaţională, care va asigura dezvoltarea societăţii bazate pe cunoaştere. Articolul analizează cele mai importante momente în realizarea unei strategii europene coerente în domeniul digitizării patrimoniului cultural european. Autoarea face un inventar al proiectelor şi iniţiativelor de nivel european în domeniu. Sunt menţionate şi descrise succint GABRIEL (GAteway and BRIdge to Europe’sNational Libraries - 1997-2004), TEL (2001-2004) si TEL-ME-MOR (2005-2007), ca momente cheie într-o evoluţie firească către crearea unei biblioteci digitale europene. Proiectul Biblioteca Digitală Europeană (EDL) a fost lansat în 2006, cu finanţare de la Comisia Europeană în cadrul programului eContentplus, şi este coordonat de Biblioteca Naţională a Germaniei. În comunicatul i2010 – Biblioteci digitale, Comisia Europeană anunţa strategia de promovare şi sprijinire a realizării Bibliotecii Digitale Europene, ca unul dintre obiectivele strategice în cadrul Iniţiativei pentru Societatea Informaţiei - i2010. Constituirea bibliotecii digitale naţionale este privită ca parte componentă a bibliotecii digitale europene, şi are ca principal scop conservarea şi protecţia patrimoniului cultural naţional existent în bibliotecile din sistemul de biblioteci, precum şi promovarea colecţiilor şi lărgirea accesului la informaţie. Articolul prezintă concluziile studiului de fezabilitate privind digitizarea, prezervarea digitală şi accesibilitatea online a resurselor deţinute de bibliotecile din România, realizat de Biblioteca Naţională în 2007, la cererea Ministerului Culturii şi Cultelor. Creating digital content and making it accessible online is a necessary step in the information society which will ensure the development of the knowledge society. The paper analyses the milestones in development of a coherent European strategy for digitization of European cultural heritage. The author makes an inventory of the European projects and initiatives in the field. GABRIEL (GAteway and BRIdge to Europe’s National Libraries – 1997 – 2004), TEL (2001 – 2004) and TEL–ME-MOR (2005-2007) are mentioned and described, as being important moments in the evolution towards creation of a European Digital Library. Launched in 2006, the EDL project is a Targeted Project funded by the European Commission under the eContentplus Programme, coordinated by the German National Library. In the i2010 - digital libraries statement, The European Commission announces the strategy of promoting and sustaining the European Digital Library, as a strategic goal of the initiative “i2010: European Information Society 2010”. The creation of our national digital library, as a component part of the European digital library, has as a main goal the preservation, storage and protection of the national cultural heritage existing in the Romanian libraries, and promoting collections and enhancing the of access to information. The paper presents the conclusions of a feasibility study on digitization, digital preservation and online accessibility of resources in Romanian libraries, study which was realised by the National Library in 2007, at the request of the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs.
