Summary/Abstract: The importance of coherence, as the communicative element of writing, stems from the sociological aspect and the dialogical form of writing in which the writer as the emitent establishes a communicative relationship with the reader as his/her recepient. This study is based on the analysis of coherence in English language student essays from the standpoint of the English rhetorical pattern which is characterized by the reader-based type of writing. The wider scope of this study delineates the discourse competence, as one of the elements of communicative competence, because it encompasses the element of negotiation with the purpose of attaining full communicative potential in the written discourse. As one of the most significant elements of the discourse competence, coherence represents an important writing element that is indispensable in the process of achieving a complete framework of reference (Widdowson 2007) in a text. Conducting an experimental study, after the modified teaching input, we analyzed English language student essays as the pre-test and the post-test in order to determine the potential progress in using coherence in writing. The obtained results significantly contribute to the understanding of student progress in writing in relation to macro and micro structure of essay writing and they yield further implications to the teaching process of academic writing at the undergraduate level.
