Summary/Abstract: The main topic of this paper is the terms used for tenses in contemporary Serbian and Italian language. The aim of the research is to study and describe both grammatical and semantic terminology in the category of verbal tenses, and to establish similarities and differences between these two languages on a given subject by mutual comparison. We applied a two-way contrast analysis. The research has shown that the verbal systems of the Italian and the Serbian language are very different and that the terminology of tenses has changed greatly in the Serbian language since the period of Vuk Karadžić up to the present day, while in Italian there were never any major deviations from the usual terms. Finally, it is concluded that, in most cases, tenses in Italian carry semantic terms, while in Serbian they carry grammar terms.
