Summary/Abstract: In "Emancypantki", the 1894 novel by Bolesław Prus, an archetypal landscape with a lime-tree draws the reader’s attention, among the numerous garden and park landscapes. This is the destination space of the last (literal and existential) journey of Karolina Latter, one of the main female characters. This space is two-dimensional: whilst fulfilling this character’s idyllic daydreams or vision of solace and relief, it becomes a venue of her marching into death. The intriguing scenery featuring a lime-tree connotes a rich anthropological and cultural symbolism while also opening the Prus novel to an intertextual dialogue with the German Romanticist tradition – specifically, Wilhelm Müller’s poem "Der Lindenbaum" from his cycle "Wanderlieder […]. Die Winterreise" (1823) which was made famous through the Schubert musical setting and later on recollected in Thomas Mann’s "Der Zauberberg".
