Summary/Abstract: In recent years a lot of discussions have been launched concerning the issue of whether the fertile agricultural land should be provided for the purposeful production of biomass. Although the use of straw and other agricultural residues in biomass proceeding is facing fewer critics, more arguments are put against planting energy crops. The biggest issue about it is the loss of soil fertility due to soil exhaustion by energy crops cultivation as well as wasting of productive land for the purpose other than food production at the time of hunger around the world. To discuss the real situation in the field of biomass and agricultural food production we will focus on the EU case with its sustainability targets. Besides that, the analysis from global socio-economic perspective will be also conducted. The research will be conducted based on the official statistical data, EU legislation and scientific argumentations.
