Summary/Abstract: The Polish energy sector is shaped by a combination of regulations, especially those pertaining to environmental protection, domestic and international energy resource availability, and pricing of both renewable and non- renewable resources, in addition to the economics of energy exploration, transport, refining, production, distribution, and final energy use. The article outlines the main global factors shaping the use of energy sources in Poland and in the world, and proposes that strategic management of the Polish energy industry be based on minimizing the discounted unit social cost of final energy use as the criterion for optimizing decisions on choosing energy sources and conversion technologies.
