Summary/Abstract: "Mansfield Park" by Jane Austen is a sophisticated and perfectly composed novel, notwithstanding its often being approached as antiquated and conservative. I argue in my essay that this particular novel by Austen as well as her other novels offer a penetrating picture of a social hierarchy and the ways in which such hierarchy shapes the most intimate sphere of the female characters. affections and sentiments. As a poor relation, Fanny Price is completely dependent upon the decisions of her influential paternal uncle, a baronet and proprietor of slaves in the Caribbean Islands. She can see many a woman around her with their existences wasted. As she is reluctant to follow in their footsteps, she conceals her desire and, in spite of her uncle’s anger, opposes the project to marry an unloved well-off man. This effectively makes her personal value in the matrimonial market grow, till she finally gets married to a dreamed-of man and becomes a lady of the manor where she previously was merely pushed about.
