Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the role played by the publisher’s catalogues in the book-promotion process in the second half of the nineteenth century. The analysis of these source materials allows us to determine the book production of publishing houses as well as the book-stock in bookstores. The publishers’ lists inform us about the reading interests of the literary public (the most popular authors and books). They provide information about: the main publishing centres both in Poland and abroad, book prices, binding, the number of pages and the contents of the publication. They also fulfilled an advertising role encouraging the public to buy books.
