Summary/Abstract: The work is the first contribution to the biography of Mieszko I. It focuses on the events of 963, the first recorded mention of the activities of Miesz-ko I. The article begins with an overview of recent interpretations of written sources pertaining to the earliest history of Poland and then looks at Mieszko I’s 963 defeat in confrontation with Wichmann as a source and historical fact.
