Summary/Abstract: The essay offers interpretation of Camille Claudel's artistic work through the feminist theory of the 'female gaze', following Laura Mulvey's critical approach to the objectifying 'male gale' and, more recently, Jill Soloway's ideas on a possible 'female gaze' that could reverse the subject-object relation in cinema and art in general. The difficult artistic experience of Camille Claudel in the time of Belle Epoque is seen as groundbreaking on the level of her work with the material, thematic choice of her sculptures, and personal negotiations with art dealers. Dobromira Terpesheva, student in Bachelor's program Art Studies and Art Management, write the essay for Prof. Irina Genova's course European Art: 19th Century.
