Summary/Abstract: The article recapitulates the main theses of "The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period" by William St Clair. St Clair made good use of very extensive archive sources and brilliantly reconstructed British book culture in the 19th century. He demonstrated the importance of changes in copyright and prices, and in the technologies of book production and methods of print distribution.
