Summary/Abstract: Cultural diversity as one of identity characteristic ofcontemporary society is reflected in different ways in the educationalsystem as well. The textbook as an element of teaching is animportant factor of mutual understanding, respect, acceptance ofindividuals who wish to preserve their cultural identity in thebroadest sense. Reader as a kind of anthology of literary texts,didactically formed, allows acquisition of certain experiences(through the literary art), building up attitudes, development ofcompetencies in the sense of interculturality. The author analyzes thecontent of 20 readers approved for teaching in elementary grades, inorder to determine: (a) whether and in which way the thematicstructure of readers for younger grades of elementary schoolcontributes to the development of intercultural competence; (b) whichelements of teaching, in the opinion of teachers, to the greatest extentcontribute to interculturality. The research results show that: (a) asmall number of literary texts in the analyzed readers contribute tothe development of intercultural competences related to learning inorder to know, learning to live together with others and learning tobe; (b) teachers believe that the organization of teaching and thereader contribute the most to interculturality. Although the reader isprimarily addressed to pupil, the teacher has the task to put thecontent of textbooks into function of interculturaly development.
