Summary/Abstract: Two varieties of Epigravettian seem to have existed in the Middle Don region during the Late Valday period. The first one includes some of the sites, which were previously attributed to the Zamyatnin culture (Kostenki 2, 3, 19). The industry is in general rather featureless, but is distinguished by a wide use of steep and abrupt retouch. The second group includes Kostenki 11, cultural layer 1 (this site too was thought to belong to the Zamyatnin culture), as well as Borshchevo II and I (?), Divnogorie 1, 2, 9, and Nazarovka (lower layer). The materials of the Final Palaeolithic site of Samotoevka should most likely be attributed to the Byki culture, though geographically it is situated 280 km southeast of the Byki aggregation of sites.
