Summary/Abstract: The Romanian village bears incredible traditions related to birth that have not only been preserved in the collective mentality of its dwellers, but there are many of them still practiced. A particular aspect carried on during the birth customs, which is also spread in Oltenia, is that of the magical practices for protecting the child. In this study there are approached some of them, those that were used in limited situations, in case of illnesses or frequent cases of infantile death: the choice of the Godfather, the symbolic selling, the change of the baptism name. Through their accomplishment, there was also assured, in the traditional mentality, the continuation of the individual’s existence under beneficial circumstances.
