Is There a Theory of Rural Areas Development and Do We Need Such a Theory?

Summary/Abstract: The author asks questions about the trajectory and scientific advancement of studies of rural areas. He makes an overview of major scientific achievements in the scope of disciplines which tackle rural areas. A thesis is argued that rural areas are of specific character as an individual object of studies. Another thesis is formulated about a need to create interdisciplinary theory of rural areas development, which is followed by a presentation of academic achievements of social sciences, especially sociology, economy and socio-economic geography, which may become foundations for such a theory.
