Summary/Abstract: The cat is a recurrent and significant presence in the lives of Haruki Murakami's characters. This essay aims to enrich the already abundant criticism on Murakami by exploring the use of cat symbolism in his major fiction. Revisiting psychoanalytical theories, the article explore the images projected by Murakami onto his fictional cats. Tracking down the symbolism of Murakami's cats the reader can obtain valuable insight into the dark meanders of the human mind.
