Summary/Abstract: The change of system drastically transformed the functioning of society in Tokaj-Hegyalja, it placed the economic structure on new foundations and parallel with this there was also a change in the picture formed of the individual and collective action of economic actors. Within this there was also a revaluation of the role of the cooperatives that had played a determining role in Hegyalja for 150 years and grouped a broad stratum of producers. Under the combined influence of external and internal factors, judgement of the cooperatives has become ambivalent despite the fact that they have many positive qualities for small producers. This article examines the situation of the cooperatives in the period following the change of system from the viewpoint of economic anthropology. Based on interviews with producers in Hegyalja and data available on the economic organisations, a picture emerges of the economic attitude that now characterises this form of collective action.
