Summary/Abstract: The “Restoration Center” department in the National Library is responsible for the preservation and exhibition of the objects in the collections of the following departments and not only: Bulgarian Historical Archives, Oriental Collections, Manuscripts and Old Printed Books. These collections include cartographic maps, graphics and drawings, manuscripts, printed books, photographs, Oriental archival documents, photographic albums, documents on parchment, and many others.Following world-wide trends, the conservation professionals are seeking to provide the best proposals for preventive conservation care, minimal restorative intervention, and proposals for appropriate archival preservation. The restoration intervention in the department has its own history and characteristic trends, changing over the years. This is most evident in the restoration of book bindings. In the past the accepted approach has been to rebind and replace the cover, however today the restorers strive not to alter the original appearance and authenticity of a book body.
