Formation of collections at Department of Rare Books of the Tomsk State University‘s Scientific Library Organization of an international school for restoration

Summary/Abstract: Rare Books and Manuscripts Department was created at the Scientific Library of the Tomsk State University in 1944. It keeps unique fund of literary monuments in Siberia with over 120,000 library units. The Regional Center for Document Conservation was established on the basis of the Division of Hygiene and Restoration of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department in 2002. Now the center employs 11 people. There are no educational institutions for the training of restorers of literary monuments in Siberia and Ural. The great distances and financial difficulties further complicate the completion of restoration centers with staff. There is a lack of restorers throughout the Siberian region. In regions’ libraries (especially those behind the Urals), significant amounts of literary monuments of global, federal and regional importance are stored that need urgent restoration.
