Summary/Abstract: One basic problem that needs to be resolved in chemical treatment processes for restoration of glass plates negatives is the risk of the photo emulsion flaking off caused by the immersion of the negative in water solutions. This paper depicts the various aspects of chemical treatment techniques most popular in Russian restoration tradition including the negative effect they have on long-term storage of negatives. A specific focus is placed on the methodology developed at the laboratory of the All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute for Archives and Records Management (VNIIDAD) which gives stable results posing minimum danger to the state of the photo emulsion layer.Discussing several examples taken from the practice of the Laboratory for restoration of photo documents at the Historical Museum, this article presents the merits of this method in fighting various defects of chemical origin that appear on the negatives as a result of mistakes made during initial processing of photos as well as defects that have occurred during storage.
