Summary/Abstract: Founded in 1956 the restoration center of “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library was first headed by Stella Alkalaj – a person who left a trace in the preservation and restoration of works on paper, not only in Bulgaria but also around the world.Throughout its existence, the largest restoration laboratory in the country for handwritten, documentary and literary heritage has been led by six leaders, each of whom has great merits in various aspects. The staff participated in many conferences and received its education in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Rome, Andover and other leading cities. The conservation professionals have established relationships with other institutions around the world. Thanks to them, the conservation department has become a methodological center for libraries, museums, scientific and cultural institutions working in the field of conservation and care for paper works. Besides consulting and restoring valuable documents, the department has educated professionals for the conservation laboratories created by the State Archive, the Bulgarian Academy of Science, the Military Archive, the Institute of History of the Bulgarian Communist Party and the National Library “Ivan Vazov”. Over the years, many of the most valuable and iconic monuments of Bulgarian culture have been conserved by the specialists in the restoration center of the National Library.
