Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the reasons for the integration of Austria with the European Community/European Union, primarily emphasizing political issues. Applying the criteria of chronology and different issues, she discusses the most important stages and matters that were decisive in the process of Austria’s accession to the EU. The specific situation of this state followed from its geopolitical position and neutral status. These factors determined the negotiation process. The paper also illustrates the fact that Austria’s membership of EU structures raises controversy, can be troublesome, and forces the EU to come up with legal solutions and political decisions that help avoid pitfalls in its functioning.
