Summary/Abstract: Chamail is the name for religious, literary Muslim manuscripts, popular among the Muslims in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its basic task and function is to serve as a prayer book, though it may contain all kinds of other texts besides the religious ones, or written for specific purposes. The present article is concerned with this additional, quasi prayer functions of chamails, such as speeches and addresses, fragments of literature, personal notes, spells and prophecies. It examines it in reference to the wider quasi literary tradition, the so-called silvae rerum (nobility’s home chronicles).
