Summary/Abstract: Quotations from ancient Christian writers have been used as a fundament in doctrinal argumentation along with biblical citations from the 4th century onward. The use of this line of argumentation, referred to as “patristic”, has been also studied by scholars in the context of Augustine’s involvement in the Pelagian controversy. In this paper I succinctly relate the polemical debates surrounding this issue and make use of Andrew C. Chronister’s new findings. The aim of my study is to show that Augustine used patristic argumentation in two letters written before 411 (Epp. 93 and 108) in his polemics with the Donatists in exactly the same way as he did later on during the Pelagian controversy.
