Summary/Abstract: During my stay at the University of Stockholm (November 2010–October 2011) as a visiting researcher, I discovered among the offprints of Gunnar Jarring a letter of Lawrence Krader addressed to Jarring, and dated December 7, 1959. Enclosed to the letter was a typewritten version of an article of Krader on the ethnography of Asia, prepared for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, as well as the manuscript which is the subject of this article. According to Krader, staying at that time at the American University in Washington D.C., these documents “were given to me by Mr. A. F. Mackenzie in 1952, a month after his return from Afghanistan. Mr. Mackenzie is a teacher and lawyer. They were collected the previous year as he states”.
