Summary/Abstract: Between 6th and 8th century A.D, Western Thebes was one of the major centres of Egyptian monasticism. Excavations conducted in this area for more than one hundred years brought thousands of ostraca and papyri scraps documenting the daily life of the Theban monks. A substantial part of this material refers to religious issues. On one hand, the explicitly religious texts written on ostraca, such as biblical, liturgical and homiletical passages, reveal the basic spiritual diet of the monk. On the other hand, the monastic letters show how theological concepts and religious imagery were put into the practice of daily communication. The paper has two objectives. Firstly, it presents and interprets the corpus of ostraca with religious texts. Secondly, it gives examples of the main religious topics present in the epistolary corpus of Theban monks, with the use of Scripture, prayer, and blessing as the most important issues.
