Summary/Abstract: This article addresses the complexities of the distinction between “high” and “low” literature. I offer a brief survey of the development of so-called Unterhaltungsliteratur, or light fiction, in Hungary, followed by a presentation of the essays and articles on this topic in the Hungarian literary journal Nyugat (1908–1941), which the passing of time notwithstanding retain much of their relevance today.
