Summary/Abstract: The study captures certain demographic and economic realities of Romanian rural space in the period 1930-1939 and their impact on agriculture. Analysis is performed from the perspective of the four so-called vicious circles of rural poverty: the vicious demographic circle characterized by the vulnerability of rural population to the challenges of sustainability; the vicious circle of distance which deals with poor, undeveloped or insufficient infrastructure; the vicious circle of education given by the low rate of school enrolment; the vicious circle of the labor market characterized by low employment chances, high poverty rate, seasonal character of work, migration of potential workforce, little entrepreneurial spirit, lack of services, almost non-existent economic dynamics. The discourse is supported by data and information from the economic literature of the period under discussion and makes reference to certain postwar works
