Summary/Abstract: The largest mining project currently existing in Europe, the Rosia Montana project, in the “custody” of the Romanian-Canadian company called Gold Corporation Ltd., has a special significance for Romania’s population and for that reason it stirred many controversies, both in the local community and at state and European level. The growing national and European interest manifested towards the current situation in the town of Rosia Montana, has determined us to choose it as a discussion topic. For the purpose of further developing the theme, we have set as primary goal the diagnosis of the status quo in Rosia Montana, starting from the identification of the main landmarks in the evolution of the mining project in this area and continuing with the specification of the main consequences on the rural and urban development to be expected as resulting from this project. The conclusion is simple. The startup of the project would not be the ideal solution for a long term resolution of social, economic, environmental, historical problems, or, for that matter, any other issues that the local population and implicitly the population of Romania is confronted with in the present.
