Summary/Abstract: In terms of the scientific article the author explores the functional nature of scientific technical means and their purpose. It is the allocation of the author of signs and grouping of scientific-technical means provides an opportunity to clarify the legal and organizational issues related to the results of applying these tools in the investigation of crimes in penal institutions. The author's analysis of the notion of scientific and technical tools used in the investigation of crimes in penal institutions, defining their functions and enable to ascertain the nature of the concepts of data resulting from the application of scientific and technical means and their use in the investigation of crimes in penal institutions.
